Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?

Does Casual Online affect Pro League rank?
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes—Friend Lobby, Casual Online, and Pro League all require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership plus a Nintendo Account. Offline Island Crown, local multiplayer, and leisure sightseeing do not need NSO. The official US store page lists internet access, NSO, and an account under online play requirements.
If you buy the Switch 2 bundle that includes this game, Nintendo advertises three months of NSO Individual membership in the box offer.
What is Friend Lobby?
Friend Lobby lets up to eight friends queue together, pick from multiple sports, and play with up to two people on each Switch 2 console. Nintendo’s store description matches review notes from Game Informer: participants can play different sports at the same time, but you cannot spectate another friend’s match from the lobby.
Friend Lobby is the low-pressure way to party up before anyone touches Pro League ranks. Use Nintendo’s friend codes or your existing Switch friends list; voice/video for friends goes through GameChat (below).
How does Casual Online work?
Casual Online matchmaking covers nine sports and deliberately ignores ranked progress. The store says wins and losses are not counted toward Pro League. Eurogamer adds that strangers communicate with sticker emotes rather than open voice chat, and that special rule variants can appear online.
The nine sports align with Island Crown’s competitive set—everything except Skateboarding, Power Cruising, and Prop Plane. See the full sports list for names and links.
What about Pro League and GameChat?
Pro League is the ranked global mode with skill-based pairing; GameChat adds voice (and optional USB camera video) for friends when requirements are met. Pro League details—including starting rank letters and promotion rules—are summarized in our Pro League guide. GameChat needs internet, NSO, an account, compatible USB camera hardware for video, and may be restricted in some countries per Nintendo’s footnotes.
Eurogamer reports a maximum of two players per console in online matchmaking, which matters when planning couch co-op into ranked queues.
Which sports are offline-only online?
Skateboarding, Power Cruising, and Prop Plane are leisure events focused on local play and Wuhu sightseeing, not internet versus. GameSpot explicitly separates the nine online sports from this leisure trio. You can still explore and collect offline; see Wuhu Island exploration.
For controller limits online, read controllers and compatibility. For couch sessions without NSO, see local multiplayer.
Do you need extra subscriptions beyond NSO?
Standard Nintendo Switch Online Individual or Family membership satisfies the store requirement; no separate Sports pass is listed. The bundled Switch 2 hardware offer includes three months of Individual membership in the US listing, which covers Friend Lobby and Pro League during the launch window if you buy that SKU. GameChat video adds USB camera hardware but does not replace the NSO requirement.
Family groups should confirm child account permissions for online play and voice before enabling GameChat. Ranked-minded players still need to purchase the base game separately—NSO alone does not grant access.
What happens if NSO lapses?
Friend Lobby, Casual Online, Pro League, and GameChat stop working until membership renews, but offline Island Crown and local multiplayer remain available. Digital purchases stay tied to your Nintendo Account; renewing NSO restores online menus without redownloading the 16 GB title per Nintendo’s storage listing.
If you mainly play offline, skip NSO at purchase and add it later when your group wants Pro League practice. Track which of the nine online sports your friends prefer before paying, especially if leisure favorites like Prop Plane are offline-only for versus play.
