Switch Sports Resort Local Multiplayer — Couch Play on Switch 2
Local multiplayer in Switch Sports Resort: 1-4 players on one Switch 2, TV and Tabletop modes, Joy-Con sharing, Boxing needs and sports without local co-op.
FAQ
How many local players are supported?
Do you need extra Joy-Con?
Can two people play Island Crown together?
Is Tabletop mode always co-op friendly?
How does local multiplayer work?
Up to four people can play on one Nintendo Switch 2 in TV or Tabletop mode without Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo’s product page lists local player counts of one to four and highlights the same motion sports available online, minus the need for a membership. This is the main selling point for family rooms—rotate sports from the full list and stay offline if you prefer.
Set the console where everyone has swing space; the US store does not list Handheld mode for this title.
How many Joy-Con do you need?
Plan on at least one pair of Joy-Con for two-player sessions and two pairs for four-player nights, but read sport-specific exceptions before you invite guests. Eurogamer describes a shorthand: two players can share one Joy-Con pair for many events, while four players often need two pairs. That breaks down for Boxing, where IGN’s day-one review says each fighter needs two Joy-Con locally.
Skateboarding uses Joy-Con 2 mouse mode and may need additional Joy-Con 2 units for multi-player leisure runs per Nintendo Life. Power Cruising allows one Joy-Con per rider in multiplayer according to IGN’s October update, while solo play can use both Joy-Con like handlebars.
Full hardware notes live in controllers and compatibility.
Which modes support couch co-op?
Quick sport pick supports most party layouts; Island Crown co-op is limited to three sports. GameSpot names Tennis, Volleyball, and Basketball as cooperative within Island Crown (Island Crown guide). Other Crown events are solo climbs. Leisure sightseeing can be taking turns on Power Cruising, Skateboarding, or Prop Plane rather than simultaneous split-screen—see Wuhu Island exploration.
Friend Lobby and online modes are separate; they need NSO and cap at two players per console online per Eurogamer (online guide).
Any local limitations to know?
Table Tennis lacks local co-op in Tabletop mode according to Nintendo Life, and leisure sports do not offer online-style versus on the couch beyond their built-in rules. Bowling variants such as 100 Pin Bowling return per GameSpot but still respect the same controller sharing limits as standard bowling.
Thumb Wrestling is inherently one-versus-one on a single pair of Joy-Con held vertically—great for quick duels between main event rounds.

What makes a good local game night?
Rotate low-controller sports between high-demand ones so guests are not stuck waiting for Joy-Con charges. Bowling, Golf, and Thumb Wrestling work well as open-door events because they tolerate Joy-Con sharing more gracefully than Boxing. Schedule Boxing last when you have four free Joy-Con available—IGN’s hardware note is the main party killer if you only own one pair.
Use Tabletop mode for quick Thumb Wrestling duels on a coffee table, but move to TV mode for Volleyball or Tennis where horizontal swing room matters. Nintendo Life’s Table Tennis Tabletop limitation means ping-pong nights still belong on the big screen even if the console sits below it.
Does local play earn the same rewards as online?
Yes for Spocco Points and many achievements—IGN notes offline and online both feed the 1,000-point Item Center rolls. Local sessions also progress Island Crown ranks on the same console without NSO. Only Friend Lobby, Casual Online, Pro League, and GameChat require membership (online guide). Leisure sightseeing can be handled as hot-seat turns: one player runs a five-minute Prop Plane photo route while others watch, then swap controllers for Power Cruising loops on Wuhu Island.
If you are deciding whether the game fits your household, pair this page with is it worth it for price and review context.
