FAQ

Does Switch Sports Resort work on the original Nintendo Switch?
No. Nintendo’s store page states the game is available exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.
Can you use original Joy-Con?
According to IGN’s October 2026 review update, original Joy-Con work for all sports except Skateboarding, which requires Joy-Con 2 mouse mode.
Is handheld mode supported?
The US Nintendo Store lists TV mode and Tabletop mode only, not Handheld.
Is Wii Sports Resort the same game?
No. Wii Sports Resort is a 2009 Wii title. This is a separate Switch 2 sequel in the modern Sports series—see our comparison guide for differences.

Does Switch Sports Resort work on Switch 1?

No—the game is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s product page states it is “exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 system,” so cartridges and downloads for this title will not run on the original Switch or Switch Lite. Search queries about “Wii Sports Resort on Switch” usually refer to the 2009 Wii classic, not this 2026 release; that older game is not this package.

If you only own Switch 1 hardware, you need a Switch 2 to play. Bundle listings on Nintendo’s store include a Switch 2 plus a full game download and three months of Nintendo Switch Online Individual membership.

Which controllers does each sport need?

Joy-Con 2 is the default for swings, twists, and bows; Skateboarding alone requires Joy-Con 2 placed in mouse mode on a flat surface. Nintendo’s overview article describes pulling back to accelerate, tilting to steer, and jumping for tricks in Skateboarding. Power Cruising uses a handlebar grip with twist-to-accelerate on the right Joy-Con per previews, and Prop Plane plays like tilting a paper airplane.

How many controllers for local multiplayer?

The store lists one to four players on one system; extra Joy-Con or pairs may be required depending on sport. Nintendo notes additional accessories may be needed for local multiplayer. Eurogamer summarizes a common setup as two players sharing one pair of Joy-Con and four players needing two pairs, but sports differ—Boxing demands more controllers per fighter.

Plan for Tabletop or TV mode sessions; the US store does not list Handheld mode for this title. Our local multiplayer guide breaks down split Joy-Con sports versus dual-controller Boxing.

Does the Pro Controller work?

What about online play controller limits?

Online modes allow up to sixteen players total with a maximum of two participants per console in matchmaking, per Eurogamer and the official Friend Lobby spec (eight friends, two per system). That cap affects how many people can share one TV during online play. Skateboarding, Power Cruising, and Prop Plane are not in the nine online sports set according to GameSpot.

Power Cruising solo Both Joy-Con as handlebars Same gesture set per Nintendo

Nintendo’s safety messaging applies to both generations: strap in, clear play space, and never slam controllers during mouse mode on furniture.
